The Importance Of Realistic Practice

Practice is the key factor for success in any exam. The more you practice, the better you’ll score!

An important part of NEET-PG prep is taking full-length practice tests under realistic conditions. Since you want to mimic the NEET experience as closely as possible, you need to make use of question banks, mock tests and sample papers. Taking mock tests for NEET also gives you a better prediction of your score and helps to determine areas where more focus may be required.

Practicing with various types of test questions through mock tests is also necessary to hone the section-specific strategies and grasp the content. For effective preparation, you need to test your ability at regular intervals. The other big advantage of taking mock tests is that it reduces your exam fear and fills you with confidence.

Mock tests also help you really know and understand the NEET-PG exam in detail, which can give you an edge over other aspirants. Mock tests are designed to be as close to the real exam as possible in terms of concepts tested, difficulty level, time allowance, and distribution of questions (chapter-wise, concept-wise, and skill-wise) so they can give you a very realistic idea of how you would score if you took the real exam today.

As part of your test prep, spend some time looking closely at sample questions and mock tests. Think about what they’re asking and how each question is constructed. The more familiar you become with the question pattern, the less daunting the test will seem. These tests have the same variation of difficulty level and ideal time to solve each section.

If you are observing any particular pattern or mistake in the mock tests, it should be fairly easy for you to rectify it after identifying the cause of the error. Don't get bogged down by the fluctuation of your scores on mock tests, but instead analyse your performance.

Analysis is key after taking mock tests. Identify your strengths and weaknesses, the time taken to solve each section and areas where your mistakes may be the result of lack of focus and concentration or conceptual ambiguity. Mock tests provide an insight about your preparations and helps you focus on strategic points like performance, strengths, speed, technique and pattern of questions. Focus on your strengths, address your weaknesses, and decide on a time management strategy.

With regular mock tests, you will have a clear idea about how much time you require for solving each section. Use the mocks to identify the time that will be required for each section at various difficulty levels. You need to understand that the time allocated needs to be increased or decreased based on the difficulty level of the paper.

According to experts and toppers, your method of taking mock tests will determine your performance on the final day. Below are some methods to apply during your mock tests:

  • Take at least 3 to 4 mock tests in a week and analyse them whenever you have the time.
  • Make sure you have at least a day's gap in between two mocks so that you can work on your mistakes and improve them.
  • Note your error type and change your strategy. If you are observing any particular pattern or mistake in the mock tests, it should be fairly easy for you to rectify it after identifying the cause of the error.
  • In the last week prior to the NEET-PG exam, try to take a full-length mock test every day.

Treat it as your stage rehearsal before the final show. You will not only be well prepared for the sections and topics, but you'll be able to sit through 180 minutes straight without losing focus.

The good news is there are various online platforms like Kaplan that provide quality mock tests for NEET-PG. Try them out for yourself and good luck!
