OET® approved for the Match English Language Requirement
Since the suspension of the Step 2 CS exam, many IMGs and US-citizen IMGs are having to find other pathways for 2021 Match eligibility. Each of these pathways requires proof of English language proficiency.
The ECFMG has announced that the OET® exam is now approved as the English Language Proficiency exam which ECFMG applicants must take in order to satisfy their English language proficiency requirement for 2021 Match eligibility.
What is OET?
OET (Occupational English Test) is an international English language test for healthcare professionals who wish to practice in an English-speaking environment. It provides a reliable and valid assessment of language proficiency with a focus on communication in healthcare professional settings.
What is the Structure of OET?
OET is approximately 3 hours long and consists of 4 sections.
- Listening (Approximately 45 minutes, and 42 questions) - In this section you will listen to and answer questions about consultations, workplace conversations, and presentations.
- Reading (60 minutes, and 42 questions) - During this section you will read and answer questions on healthcare topics set in healthcare workplaces.
- Writing (45 minutes) - During this section you will need to write a letter, often a referral letter, based on case notes and other documents.
- Speaking (Approximately 20 minutes) - This section consists of two role-plays with an examiner, in a private room.
How the OET Scored?
The results for the four sections are reported on a scale from 0 to 500 in ten-point increments. That numerical score is then mapped to a separate letter grade for each section ranging from A (highest) to E (lowest).
ECFMG Applicants must attain a minimum score of 350 (Grade B ) on each of the four sections in order to meet ECFMG’s language requirement.
How to Register for OET?
In order to start the application, you must pre-register through the ECFMG page on the OET website. During this process you will be able to indicate your preferred testing dates and which country and city. OET will email you after you pre-register with information on your nearest test location and next steps. The test fee is approximately $407 USD ($587 AUD).
Test dates for the OET Medicine are available for ECFMG applicants beginning in August 2020. There are two test dates available each month requiring registration a month in advance. Make sure you pre-register as soon as possible to secure your spot as spaces are limited.
Since the ERAS application release date is October 21, 2020, having a passing OET score before that date would be advantageous for 2021 Match candidates.
